Dec. 24th, 2008 03:15 pmI really wasn't sure about coming down to my parent's for Christmas. I really didn't feel like driving down last night, and I assumed the roads would get icy after dark anyway. But they were predicting more snow and possibly freezing rain for today. They also, however, said temperatures would get up to 35 so I decided to bet that the roads would be clear in the daytime.
Turns out that was a very good bet. I-5 from Auburn to Longview was very clear the whole way. In fact, there were so few cars on the road that I probably averaged above 60 miles an hour. It took me 3 or 3 1/2 hours to get down here around Thanksgiving, but today I was in Kelso in less than 2 hours.
My parents had called in the morning to talk about the weather and if I was coming down. They started the conversation by saying that a tractor trailer had gone off the I-5 bridge in Kelso next to the Three Rivers mall. I decided on the way down that since the roads were still good and I was making good time, to stop at the mall and hit Target for a last minute extra gift (play doh for my youngest niece). I assumed the truck would be all cleared up but no, there was a twisted trailer lying across all lanes of the road that goes under the freeway, just on the East side of I-5. I didn't see the tractor... I only got a glimpse as I turned right to the mall.
The toy shelves in Target were half empty. I was thinking that it was probably a really bad idea to try and get something on the 24th of December, but I found my play doh (only $1.99 even for 4 colors) and I got out alive.
It's really snowing now -- tons of big flakes coming down. It's supposed to rain tomorrow. I think I'll need to come back in the daytime / early afternoon. I still have to work on Friday. But I'm here and it wasn't even a rough trip down.
