PETA's latest campain is to "rebrand" fish as "sea kittens". Because, you know, if fish were cute and cuddly people wouldn't eat them.

NPR did a story on it. You may have heard it, or a similar story from another news source. On the PETA web site you can create your own sea kitten and read made-up stories about cuddly and smart sea kittens that nobody would ever want to eat.

One PETA representative in the NPR show compared hooking a fish and pulling it through the water to placing a kitten on a hook and dragging it behind your car. *boggle* They also state on their web site that people wouldn't eat fish sticks if they were called "sea kitten sticks". Yeah, I think Gorton's will get right to work on that one.

There are so many things I could say about this... but the pot-shots are almost too easy. Granted, we're overfishing our oceans at an alarming rate... but I don't think calling fish "sea kittens" is actually the solution to that problem. Or any problem, really, unless the problem is "how can PETA become even more irrelevant?"

I was inspired to eat some sea kitten today, but as it turned out the Skipper's on Auburn Way has closed down... some time ago, as it turns out. Score one for PETA, I suppose. It's already been replaced by a hamburger joint. But I wasn't in the mood for pasture kitten, so I went to Sunny Teriyaki and got some feathered kitten teriyaki.

I'm tempted to rebrand PETA leaders as "land mollusks".
